Brann was on all fours on the floor when Mak popped his head through the bedroom door. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ old hit, “December, 1963” blasted at high volume. Off-key, Brann sang along with gusto, also at high volume.

Brann knew Mak hated his taste in music, accusing him of getting stuck in the seventies musically and never making it out. “Hey, Captain Yacht Rock! What the fuck are you doing?” Mak hollered. Brann smiled but ignored the jab. He knew it would piss his friend off even more. “Turn that shit down, man! My ears are bleeding!” Mak hustled across the room, grabbed the remote, and turned the volume down to two.

Brann continued to screech in a falsetto, “Oh what a night!” Nothing would ruin his mood today. Not after last night.

“What are you doing down there, buddy?”

“I’m looking for my cuff links. I tossed them over here last night and still can’t find one of them. Oh, wait, there it is.” Brann reached under his bureau and pulled out the little golden cuff link he’d discarded last night. He held it up like a treasure as he got off the floor.

Mak was clearly trying to read the situation, perplexed by how sickeningly happy his friend was.

“So, how’d it go?”

“Oh gods, Mak. How’d it go? How’d it go. Well, I just had the best fucking night of my life, that’s how it went. The best fucking night and, quite frankly, the best fucking. Gah!” Brann held his head like it was going to explode, his smile beaming. “Monica is … oh man, Mak. I don’t have words.”

“And why aren’t you cuddling at her place right now, Romeo?”

“We didn’t go to her place. We came back here last night.” Brann turned toward the bed. “She had to take off early. Left me a note. Said she had plans to meet someone for coffee this morning or something. She was gone before I woke up. But, oh Mak, I’ve got to figure out when I can see her again. I don’t want to seem annoyingly eager, but I feel like an addict.”

Mak, obviously stunned, came up beside Brann and feigned taking his temperature. Brann never brought women back to the mansion. He was infamous among his friends as Mister “I keep those lines nice and clear. Sex life, personal life. No confusion.”

But last night, he’d wanted Monica here. He’d wanted the smell of her in his bed. Just thinking about it made him want to roll around in his sheets like a big canine bathing in a particularly intoxicating scent.

“Just don’t forget that we have plans today. You’re not allowed to turn into one of those assholes who abandons his friends for a woman. Promise me.”

“I promise.” Brann crossed his fingers over his heart.

“All right, then get moving. We’re heading out. I’m bringing my mountain bike, and you get to be a bear, coyote, or whatever you want to shift into. We’re racing, and I’m kicking your ass.”

“Okay, first of all, I’m kicking your ass, not the other way around.
